DAVE WARD BAND

Born in Galway, Ireland David Ward moved to Canada with his family at the age of 10. He began performing and writing folk songs in Waterloo, Ontario where he grew up. After college he spent two years travelling through Ireland and Spain performing in cafes and bars. David then moved to Chicago to study Journalism where he also immersed himself in the city's vibrant indie music scene. Upon completing his post-grad in Journalism David moved to Toronto and formed The Dave Ward Band with childhood friends Matt Buller on sax and Shawn Harrigan on bass. After only two shows the band was offered a music residency at C'est What in Toronto and has been selling out the venue since.

BROWNMAN's
ACOUSTIC..&..ELECTRYC
TRIOs
From press release:
"Journey through time from the hard swinging sounds of Duke, Chet & Ella to the funkified sounds of today, served up by the 2007 National Jazz Award winners for "Electric Jazz Group of the Year".  Recently returning to Toronto from touring Japan with Guru's Jazzmatazz and only back in the city for 3 weeks before continuing on tour in Europe, the Trinidadian-born multi-award winning jazz trumpeter brings his highly successful "Art of The Trio" show to H.O.T., showcasing his love for 2 of his favourite jazz idioms - mainstream hard-swinging jazz & electrified funk/hip-hop in the chordless trio setting he so enjoys working in.   When asked why mount such a series again, Brown replies, "it's not often I get to explore both of these textures in the specific chordless [no piano or guitar] trio setting, let alone in a single night".  He leads 7 groups of his own, 4 of them - unsurprisingly - are chordless including his now internationally acclaimed latin-jazz-urban outfit  CRUZAO and his hip-hop-jazz crew GRUVASYLUM.

"Nick "Brownman" Ali's powerful trio captures the essence of the later years in Miles Davis' life, his electric period, without imitation. Brownman's ELECTRYC TRIO is uniquely his own, yet echoes with the sounds of ‘Bitches Brew’ and ‘In a Silent Way’ right down to Miles’ use of electronics while still managing to stay grounded in the sounds of today, clearly paying apt tribute to Brownman's NYC mentor Randy Brecker. Impressive.".

Brownman is currently the touring trumpet players with with legendary rapper GURU of Gangstarr & Jazzmatazz fame.  He'll be on tour for most of the Summer with Guru.

Brownman & Guru
2006 ended for Brownman with the explosive "Jazz By Genre" presentation of legendary rapper of Jazzmatazz and Gangstarr fame - GURU, held in Toronto's revered Mod Club.  The chemistry between Brown and Guru was evident, Guru even dragging him to the front of the stage to solo while the hip-hop legend held a mic in front of his bell.  This single performance would lead to a phone call from Guru's producer Solar a month later asking Brown if he was available to make an appearance on the upcoming 2007 release of 'Jazzmatazz Vol. 4' due out in stores nationwide in April 2007, replacing the luminious Donald Byrd as the featured trumpet soloist.  Brown, accepting immediately, would write a special horn arrangement of "Universal Struggle" and solo throughout the tune.  In early Feb he was again contacted by Solar - who was thrilled by Brown's work on the track and ask him to tour America for the release of JAZZMATAZZ VOL. 4.  Brownman will be touring with GURU throughout 2007 and is honoured to be Guru's featured trumpet soloist.
