Brownman's ART OF THE TRIO Series: Part 1/3 this week featuring BROWNMAN ACOUSTIC TRIO with Brownman - trumpet Mark Cashion - bass Ernesto Cervini - drums -- Recently returning to Toronto from touring with Guru's Jazzmatazz and only back in the city for 3 weeks before continuing on tour in Europe, the Trinidadian-born multi-award winning jazz trumpeter still manages to bring a new series to the Trane Studio. The "Art of the Trio" series, occuring over a trio of thursdays at Toronto's jazz hotspot, showcases his love for 3 of his favourite jazz idioms - bebop, hip-hop & latin-jazz, in the chordless trio setting he so enjoys working in. When asked why mount such a series Brownman replies, "it's not often I get to explore all 3 of these textures in the specific chordless [no piano or guitar] trio setting, let along back to back, over 3 weeks." He leads 7 groups of his own, 4 of them - unsurprisingly - are chordless including his now internationally acclaimed latin-jazz-urban outfit CRUZAO and his hip-hop-jazz crew GRUVASYLUM. -- Week 1 - Thur May 01 :: BROWNMAN ACOUSTIC TRIO :: 9pm | $10 Features the straight-ahead mainstream sounds of the 50's & 60's Bluenote era with much in demand upright bassist Mark Cashion and the young Ernesto Cervini on drums, recently returning to Toronto from New York City. -- Week 2 - Thur May 08 :: BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO :: 9pm | $10 Features the funkified sounds of the 2007 National Jazz Award winners for "Electric Jazz Group of the Year". Brownman & Electryc Trio regulars Tyler Emond on 6-string electric bass & Colin Kingsmore on drums will treat audiences to tastes of the trio's upcoming release "Raw & Unadulterated". -- Week 3 - Thur May 15 :: BROWNMAN LATIN TRIO :: 9pm | $10 Features Brown's Cuban and Brazilian latin-jazz flavours supported by bassist Paco Luviano (of CRUZAO fame) and Max Senitt (from GRUPO MONSTRUOSO). Guaranteed to be energized and inventive, this trio will explore the roots of Cuban clave alongside the depths of the Samba. |

(A 4 day political festival of forums, art & performances) proudly presents: BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO featuring Brownman - electric trumpet Tyler Emond - 6-string electric bass Colin Kingsmore - drums -- JazzOnline writes: "Nick "Brownman" Ali's powerful trio captures the essence of the later years in Miles Davis' life, his electric period, without imitation. Brownman's ELECTRYC TRIO is uniquely his own, yet echoes with the sounds of ‘Bitches Brew’ and ‘In a Silent Way’ right down to Miles’ use of electronics while still managing to stay grounded in the sounds of today, clearly paying apt tribute to Brownman's NYC mentor Randy Brecker. Impressive." |
