presents BROWNMAN PLAYS MILES feat. Buffalo's jazz finest ---- Internationally acclaimed jazz trumpet player Brownman Ali has been asked to Musically Direct a Buffalo ommunity event gauged to bring additional visibility to Buffalonians. His presence in Buffalo in the last 5 years has been so strong, that he is now considered "a mainstay in Buffalo" despite being a Canadian Brooklynite. Brownman - enlisting an all-star cast of some of Buffalo's jazz elite, will mount a 3 set concert traversing Miles Davis' whole career, a scaled-down version of his highly successful month-long production of FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES occuring every year in the fall. -- Band 1 will handle from be-bop to cool (ie - '47 w/ Bird to '59's "Kind Of Blue"). -- Band 2 will essentially be doing the primordial Wayne Shorter period with Tony, Ron & Herbie (likely selections from the encapsulating "Live at the Plugged Nickel" -- Band 3 will dig into the electric era (from '69 Bitches Brew through to Miles' hip-hop period ala "DooBop"). |

USA permutation: Brownman - electric trumpet Rodney Appleby - 6-string electric bass Aaron Staebell - drums ---- "Brownman Ali's powerful trio captures the essence of the later years in Miles Davis' life, his electric period, without imitation. Brownman's ELECTRYC TRIO is uniquely his own, yet echoes with the sounds of ‘Bitches Brew’ and ‘In a Silent Way’ right down to Miles’ use of electronics while still managing to stay grounded in the sounds of today, clearly paying apt tribute to Brownman's NYC mentor Randy Brecker. Set
2 - BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO
In recent years, when not touring the globe as the featured soloist with legendary jazz-hip-hop outfit Guru's Jazzmatazz, Toronto-based multi-award-winning Trinidadian-born trumpet player Brownman spends much of his artistic time in the exploration of "chordless" jazz - music produced without a chordal instrument (guitar or keyboard). He has explored this tonal quality for a decade with his now internationally acclaimed latin-jazz group CRUZAO, and most recently with his Miles Davis influenced BROWNMAN ELECTRYC TRIO (2007 National Jazz Award winners for "Electric Jazz Group of the Year"), who just released their debut recording on Brownman's own label Browntasauras Records. In the last few months, he has added another chordless ensemble to the roster - the BROWNMAN AKOUSTIC TRIO - to further explore the deep waters of the American jazz songbook playing tunes from Duke & Ella to Miles & Trane. -- To open the Toronto Jazz Festival, both chordless trio's will be showcased over 2 sets featuring a cross-section of some of the finest bassists and drummers in the country. Mark Cashion & Ernesto Cervinvi together anchor the jazz quintet Strange Attractors, and bring their synergistic rhythm section lock to the fore in the Akoustic Trio; while Tyler Emond & Colin Kingsmore have been the backbone of the critically acclaimed Electryc Trio for the last 4 years, bringing home both a win in '07 and a nomination in '08 at the National Jazz Awards. -- This will be a night of widely flavored trio jazz, under the leadership of one of the nation's most celebrated jazz trumpet players. Don't miss it! |

& Brownman
2006 ended for Brownman with the explosive "Jazz By Genre" presentation of legendary rapper of Jazzmatazz and Gangstarr fame - GURU, held in Toronto's revered Mod Club. This could have been just another 'backing band for out-of-town act' session for the often called Trinidadian trumpeter, but the chemistry between Brown and Guru was evident even back then on their first meeting. During that show Guru would push him out of his regular horn position to the front of the stage to solo while the hip-hop legend held a mic in front of his horn's bell. This single performance would lead to a phone call from Guru's team a month later asking Brown if he was available to make an appearance on the upcoming 2007 release of 'Jazzmatazz Vol. 4', replacing the luminious Donald Byrd as the featured trumpet soloist. Brown, accepting immediately, would write a special horn arrangement of "Universal Struggle" and solo throughout the tune. In early Feb '07 he was again contacted by Guru's people, impressed by Brown's work on the track, to ask him to tour America for the release of JAZZMATAZZ VOL. 4. Since then Brownman has been touring the world as the featured soloist with GURU's JAZZMATAZZ as they brought their unique breed of jazz-hip-hop through The United States, Europe, Japan & South America. See extensive YouTube archive of tour footage. Update:
