Subject: Week 5 - FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES - Fri Sept 30 - the conclusion... Date: Thu, 29 Sep 2005 13:30:02 -0400 From: The BROWNMAN Organization: Brownman Music Inc. -- http://www.brownman.com To: Brownman's Big Ass Mailing List Hey guys, And a big welcome to all those new to the Big Ass Mailing List. Tomorrow is the last installment of FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES at the Trane Studio... and it's been a helluva series both musically and attendance wise. Thanks to all who have been coming out and supporting live jazz in Toronto. This final show should be a monster. Hope to see you there! Quick reminder - next month (Oct) - every Monday @ Trane Studio - CHIVA will perform... and every Wed, my ELECTRYC TRIO will lay it down (featuring Larnell Lewis and Dane Wedderburn). ========================================================== * Just announced by Trane Studio - STUDENT SECOND SET: "For Week 5 - the last and final installment of Nick "Brownman" Ali's FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES Tribute Series - all students will be admited for 1/2 price with student I.D. ($10) for the second set." =========================================================== WEEK 5 of FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES @ Trane Studio http://miles.brownman.com for venue details, times, costs =========================================================== So this Friday (Sept 30) is the Week 5 performance of my FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES series at the Trane Studio in Toronto and bring to a conclusion this massive five week tribute to Miles... and will feature the incredible Pat Kilbride on bass, Enlight (from GRUVASYLUM) - coming directly from the airport from Trinidad - rapping alongside the unbelievable twenty-one(!) year old Larnell Lewis on drums with very special guest on turntables - from the POCKET DWELLERS - DJ S-Luv (who'll be coming late after a gig with P.D.). Bring a fire extinguisher... Man - what a ride! I gotta tell you, I had no idea how rewarding this series would be musically and how grateful I am that each successive how has garnered larger and larger audiences. For me, as an artist, to spend a month inside Miles' head in deep examination of both his music and his ideology has been a monster growing experience. Thanks so much to all those who have come out and checked the series out... I saw faces over the last month ranging from 15 to 75... amazing... the support to Toronto's live music jazz underground has been invaluable. And I wanna take 2 seconds to say a huge thank you to both the Trane Studio and Frank Francis for hosting this event and to each and every killer musician who stood up there on stage with me every friday as we did our best to tip our collective hats to the greatest jazz icon in the history of the artform. It's been an honour. So tomorrow (friday) is the last one and it should be a helluva party... this final show's kinda special to me also because it has less to do with what Miles did - but more about what Miles MIGHT have done... my own belief about where and what feel Miles would be today musically... hope you can make it... =========================================================== Fri Sept 30, 2005 Week 5 - "Doo-bop" - Had He Lived... =========================================================== (from press release:) Towards the end of Miles' life he began an exploration of another sub-component of modern popular music - hip-hop. The "Doo-bop" recording (Warner, '92) would feature rappers and loops and would have marked the beginning of Miles' exploration or this artform. It is often harshly referred to by critics as his "worst" documented recording and as a "forgettable" era of his life, but it still stands strongly as a prime example of the Milesian ethic -- his ability to recognize "what's next", to creatively move within and extend that artform. Brownman states, "I believe it is extremely probable that, had he lived, Miles would have worked closely with the likes of Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, junglists, DJs, rappers and beat-makers alike. Tonight will be a salute to what MIGHT have been."
