More Info: http://www.brownman.com/GigSchedule.htm Soooo - here we are - Week 4 - Electric Miles!! Last week's fantastic Week 3 installment of FIVE WEEKS OF MILES was really something dazzling for me. We really do live in a city full of world-class musicians - and last week featured 4 of our best - Adrean Farrugia, Kelly Jefferson, Scott Peterson and Ben Riley. I'm almost out of words after spending a week gushing about the group's genius collective playing that night... but, for those that missed it - I think The LIVE MUSIC REPORT sums it up well in their review - take a look: http://www.thelivemusicreport.com/clubs/traneStudio/brownmanTribute.html Errol Nazereth's insightful feature article on FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES ran in this week's EYE MAGAZINE. Check it out online: http://Brownman.com/Interviews/Eye-Sept2005/StyleForMiles.html And don't forget - all those on the Big Ass Mailing List can get in for $15 (regular tix are $20) by emailing in... more details on that at http://miles.brownman.com (dinner reservations accompanying the advance seating receive 15% off their meal...) - and guys - PLEEEEASE don't email me to get on the list - I just play trumpet and write tunes... I don't handle the list... at least not this list. I mean... I can handle many lists. And will handle many a list in the future. Just not *this* list. Don't think I don't wanna handle the list either. Would be a previlege to handle this list. But I'm not. Handling the list the list that is. Ever write a Big Ass Mailout after 36 hours without sleep cuz you were writing Miles charts? Try it. It's fun. :) Which reminds me... does anyone have a space suit or a shirt made completely out of tinfoil I could borrow this Fri? Miles'... what a freaky dresser in this, the electric era... I wanna do the same damn it! Um... and onward... So this Friday is the Week 4 performance of my FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES series at the Trane Studio in Toronto and will feature the Electric Period of Miles' life... 1969 to the late 80's... was crazy amounts of work to prep some of those Marcus Miller arrangements for the band ... And huge thanks to Chris Lamont, who will be filling in on drums for the touring Kieran Adams.... Chris' "Vinnie Coliuta-like" chops will abound for this electric evening. And a special thank you to Eric Boucher on piano - who gave up a gig with David Clayton-Thomas - of BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS, to be here! Should be a helluva night. And thanks o the unexpected numbers of people coming out to these performances... it's wonderfully gratifying to put so much effort into a production of this magnitude covering such primordial material - and actually see people respond to it. My deepest thanks to all of you for that and for supporting live music in Toronto. In terms of sets that night - the first set will focus more on the early Bitches Brew material and the second and third sets more on the 70's funk and 80's Marcus Miller years... should be a blast! Please come on down and check it out... (miles.brownman.com for more info). P.S. - Week 5 - the last one... is gonna be totally sick... please come and check it out... =========================================================== FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES - Every Friday in Sept @ Trane Studio http://miles.brownman.com for venue details, times, costs =========================================================== For 5 Fridays in Sept, I have the great honour of leading 5 different all-star ensembles through 5 historic eras of jazz which Miles Davis catalyzed & immortalized with his presence. The very detailed press release (link above) has alllll kinds of info about this event - times, ticket prices, who's performing (some of Canada's top-shelf jazz musicians - and each week is a different band), and a little synopsis I've written about each night and what that era was in the Miles historic time-line. Please check it out. Paying tribute to the greatest icon in jazz history is no small task and I hope you'll come check out the artistry of these assorted killer ensembles. =========================================================== Fri Sept 23, 2005 Week 4 - "Bitches Brew to Tutu" - Electric Miles =========================================================== Legendary as a kind of 'line in the sand' challenging jazz fans during the ascendance of electric, psychedelic rock, "In a Silent Way" (Columbia Records, 1969) hinted at the repetitive polyrhythms Davis would employ throughout the early '70s. It also partook generously of electric piano and bass tonal colourings previously explored in acoustic settings, but "In a Silent Way" and the subsequent "Bitches Brew" and "Live Evil" recordings remains a clearly electric jazz record, part ambient colour exploration, part rock-inflected energy and vibe, and part outright maverick creativity. Long, breathy solos would be a feature of this era, glistening against his new groups' strange admixture of musical moods. Miles' funkified ventures would continue through the 70's until his fateful meeting with Marcus Miller, which would lead to a long collaboration in the 80's with Miller playing producer and musical director to Miles' haunting horn. Nick "Brownman" Ali - electric trumpet Mark Patterson - electric guitar Eric Boucher - rhodes Dane Wedderburn - 7-string electric bass Chris Lamont - drums * The first set tonight will focus on the "Bitches Brew" 70's era... the second set will emphasize the "Tutu" 80's ideologies. =========================================================== UPCOMING : http://www.brownman.com/GigSchedule.htm * ELECTRYC TRIO Weds starting @ Trane Studio - every Wed in Oct/Nov!
