Subject: Week 3 - FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES - Fri Sept 16 Date: Thu, 15 Sep 2005 14:56:40 -0400 From: The BROWNMAN Organization: Brownman Music Inc. -- http://www.brownman.com To: Brownman's Big Ass Mailing List Hey guys, And a big welcome to all who are new on the Big Ass Mailing List... So here we are - the middle point - Week 3!! Last week's extraordinary Week 2 installment of FIVE WEEKS OF MILES was met with a packed house and one of the most expressive and emotive jazz crowds I've ever seen in Toronto. Youngest attendee - 17... oldest - 64!! Heavy. On behalf of the monsterously gifted Week 2 ensemble of Bob McLaren, Ryan Oliver, Jon Maharaj and Nancy Walker - our deepest thanks for such support... these world-class musicians gave so much of themselves paying musical homage that night... which would have been enough all on it's on... but to have such a rowdy and rambunctious crowd too, just made it all the better. And don't forget - all those on the Big Ass Mailing List can get in for $15 (regular tix are $20) by emailing in... more details on that at http://miles.brownman.com (dinner reservations accompanying the advance seating receive 15% off their meal...) IMPORTANT - the Trane is getting full very quickly for these shows, and as diabolically titillating as it is to watch people fight over tables - please try come early to ensure a good seat and/or table... or at least bring boxing gloves. Errol Nazereth, writer for EYE Magazine will be doing a feature piece on FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES to run in the Sept 22 issue. Watch for it! This Friday is the Week 3 performance of my FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES series at the Trane Studio in Toronto. It will feature my personal favorite era of Miles' life - the years with tenor sax visionary Wayne Shorter. Since the primordial boxset "The Complete Live At The Plugged Nickel 1964" so thoroughly encapsulates what that - the second of the great Miles Quintets (the first being with John Coltrane) - on that friday the band will play the same tunes from 2 of the sets on that box set. I've been listening those 8 CDs non-stop for the last month and really have to say that this, for me, is one of the most creative periods of not only Miles' life - but of jazz as a whole. The amount of reaching, searching & exploration these 5 men undergo together is staggered... Miles and Wayne lead the world's tightest rhythm section through bouts of frenetic hard-bop to lyrical haunting melodies right through to tonal painting avant-garde textures. We promise to do our best to give you some of that same spirit this friday. This friday's team of beastly jazz monsters are: the expressive Ben Riley (that's right - son of Doug Riley) on drums, the very bearded master of the dotted quarter-note Scott Peterson (from my regular working quartet) on bass, one of Canada's most distinct voices on piano (and occassional barking) Adrean Farrugia and the gargantuan tenor saxophone giant - Kelly Jefferson (in the role of Wayne Shorter). I love that I get to call him "gargantuan". He is you know. You coming? - Brownman =========================================================== FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES - Every Friday in Sept @ Trane Studio http://miles.brownman.com for venue details, times, costs =========================================================== For 5 Fridays in Sept, I have the great honour of leading 5 different all-star ensembles through 5 historic eras of jazz which Miles Davis catalyzed & immortalized with his presence. The very detailed press release (link above) has alllll kinds of info about this event - times, ticket prices, who's performing (some of Canada's top-shelf jazz musicians - and each week is a different band), and a little synopsis I've written about each night and what that era was in the Miles historic time-line. Please check it out. Paying tribute to the greatest icon in jazz history is no small task and I hope you'll come check out the artistry of these assorted killer ensembles. =========================================================== Fri Sept 16, 2005 Week 3 - "Plugged Nickel" - The Shorter Years =========================================================== Two quintets in particular featuring 2 tenor saxophone giants dominated Miles' musical life almost exclusively from the mid 50's, right up until the 70's; one featuring John Coltrane and the other featuring Wayne Shorter; primarily demonstrated on "Kind Of Blue" (Columbia, '64) and "Live at the Plugged Nickel" (Columbia / Legacy, '65). This period would feature an assortment of quintets and sextets, all pushing the boundaries of improvisation within a simple modal framework; the two teamings that would leave the world breathless would be those with Coltrane and Shorter. Nick "Brownman" Ali - trumpet Kelly Jefferson - tenor & soprano saxophones Adrean Farrugia - piano Scott Peterson - upright bass Ben Riley - drums =========================================================== UPCOMING : http://www.brownman.com/GigSchedule.htm =========================================================== Fri Sep 16 - FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES - Week 3 @ Trane Studio (9pm) "Plugged Nickel" - The Shorter Years Mon Sep 19 - CHIVA @ Trane Studio, Toronto (9pm) Tue Sep 20 - recording session w/ Bruce Ley (all day) Wed Sep 21 - DJ+HORN=RAD+BROWN @ Ultra Supper (8pm) Thr Sep 22 - KUSH @ Jazz By Genre Fest, Toronto (8pm) Fri Sep 23 - FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES - Week 4 @ Trane Studio (9pm) "From Bitches Brew to Tutu" - Electric Miles Sat Sep 24 - NICK ALI TRIO @ Red Guitar Arthouse, Toronto (9pm) Sun Sep 25 - BENEFIT CONCERT FOR NEW ORLEANS, Distillery (7pm) Fri Sep 30 - FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES - Week 5 @ Trane Studio (9pm) "Doo-bop" - Had he lived...
