The new generation of jazz." - Jazzonline.com reviewer "Performing organic jazz in the classic trio or quartet setting, this unit strives to embody the jazz improvising spirit of the 60's - communication. Playing selections of standards linked together in one organic mish-mash of sonic goodness, this unit brings classic jazz themes and powerful Brownman compositions into the new millenium" - Scott McLaren, CHRY radio Nick "Brownman" Ali - trumpet Michael "Danger" Herring - upright bass Joe Poole - drums =========================================================== ALI BROS Sun Jan 23 http://alibros.brownman.com (new website!) =========================================================== @ Lula Lounge - 9:00pm - 1585 Dundas St. W. $10 http://www.lula.ca 416-588-0307 "Two brothers, two horns, one mind" ------------------- "The Ali Bros embody the essence of jazz improvisational ideology erupting against a backdrop of powerful urban grooves. Funk, hip-hop, drum'n'bass, R'n'B all colliding with modern jazz textures. Their uncanny musical relationship enhanced by blood, Nick and Marcus Ali together form an incredibly synergetic, almost telepathic bond making them one of the most called upon horn men in the city. They have appeared side by side in countless horn sections in the Canadian professional music scene most nobably as the backbone to the multi-award winning latin-jazz ensemble CRUZAO, Juno nominated reggae artist Jason Wilson & TABARRUK, modern house outfit FUNKY HI-LIFE, african masters RADIO NOMAD, merengue specialists DOMINICANADA and Lula Lounge's resident Salsa powerhouse MARRON MATIZADO." ------------------- This performance is a Hospital Debt Relief Fundraiser for Argentinean flamenco dancer Noelia Grey. Highlights included performing with the legendary IRAKERE as a featured soloist (Chucho stuck me in front of the band to blow... was intense) and CRUZAO with feature sets at Teatre Nacional (the National Theatre). There too much to tell here, so a new section will be opening at brownman.com soon that will feature photos, video footage and some daily diary entries about the excursion. Truly an honour. If you attended the festival and have some digital photos of CRUZAO performances, please feel free to send them and I'll be happy to add them to the new gallery. (All images submitted will appear only on the website in a not-for-profit format). The second CRUZAO CD has begun it's recording... the first session is in the can and we're all looking forward to continuing the recording process which has been divided into 3 different recording sessions. Session 1 was in Dec and featured some fierce and fiery playing from the boys... looking forward to Session 2 in late-Jan. Thanks to those who wrote in to say they heard "Frosty El Cubano" on the radio! That Xmas single from CRUZAO will be available via jazzpromo.com for those who's like a collector's item... it was the first Xmas single for the band (a burning latin-jazz adaptation of the classic carol "Frosty the Snowman")... =========================================================== UPCOMING GIGS (http://www.brownman.com/GigSchedule.htm) =========================================================== Sat Jan 08, 10pm - MARRON MATIZADO @ Lula Lounge, Toronto Fri Jan 14, 9pm - Jason Wilson & TABARRUK @ Rainbow Bistro, Ottawa Wed Jan 19, 9pm - NICK ALI TRIO @ Honey Supper Lounge, Toronto Sat Jan 22, 9pm - Jason Wilson JAZZ-REGGAE TRIO @ Manhatten's, Guelph Sun Jan 23, 9pm - ALI BROS @ Lula Lounge, Toronto Wed Jan 26, 9pm - CRUZAO Day 1 @ the Rex, feat. all new material!!
