Subject: Week 5 - FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES - Fri Oct 29 - the conclusion... Date: Thu, 28 Oct 2004 20:20:52 -0400 From: The BROWNMAN Organization: Brownman Music Inc. -- http://www.brownman.com To: Brownman's Big Ass Mailing List Hey guys, And a big welcome to all who are new on the Big Ass Mailing List... =========================================================== WEEK 5 OF FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES... =========================================================== So this Friday (Oct 29) is the Week 5 performance of my FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES series at the Trane Studio in Toronto and bring to a conclusion this massive five week tribute to Miles... and will feature members of GRUVASYLUM - Marc Rogers on bass, Enlight rapping alongside the unbelievable twenty-one(!) year old Larnell Lewis on drums with very special guest on turntables - from the POCKET DWELLERS - DJ S-Luv. Bring a fire extinguisher... Man - what a ride! I gotta tell you, I had no idea how rewarding this series would be musically and how grateful I am that each successive show has garnered larger and larger audiences. For me, as an artist, to spend a month inside Miles' head in deep examination of both his music and his ideology has been a monster growing experience. Thanks so much to all those who have come out and checked the series out... I saw faces over the last month ranging from 15 to 75... amazing... the support to Toronto's live music jazz underground has been invaluable. And I wanna take 2 seconds to say a huge thank you to both the Trane Studio and Frank Francis for hosting this event and to each and every killer musician who stood up there on stage with me every friday as we did our best to tip our collective hats to the greatest jazz icon in the history of the artform. It's been an honour. So tomorrow (friday) is the last one and it should be a helluva party... this final show's kinda special to me also because it has less to do with what Miles did - but more about what Miles MIGHT have done... my own belief about where and what I feel Miles would be today musically... hope you can make it... =========================================================== THURSDAYS @ TRANE STUDIO - Brownman & the Electryc Trio =========================================================== Just a fast reminder that Electryc Trio Thursdays will be starting up again in Nov - so Darren Inksetter - I full expect you and your crew out eeeevery thursday staggering about the bar... Here's the band website: http://www.brownman.com/ElectrycTrio Here's the poster for the gig: http://www.brownman.com/ElectrycTrio/ElectrycTrioPoster_blue.jpg =========================================================== HELP CRUZAO GET TO CUBA... and come along too! =========================================================== As most of you know already CRUZAO has been asked to represent Canada at the Havana jazz festival in Cuba this Dec... however flights are crazy expensive and not covered by the festival (Castro you cheap bastard... I know you're reading this!)... so we're having a fundraiser at Lula Lounge on Sunday Nov 28th where all proceeds going towards flights for the band... as it is now only 2 of us can go... we're hoping to raise enough bread to bring at least one more original CRUZAO member... the rest of the band will be assembled from members of IRAKERE while in Cuba)... so pleeeeease come out and support the only Canadian latin-jazz group performing at the Havana jazz fest this year! Thanks guys! Also - those who want to come along - email me... there's a tour company offering a special package to attend the festival including airfare, accomodations, a festival pass, city tours, breakfast, and you can follow CRUZAO around and clap loudly and throw underwear... :) Anyway - I'll be putting up a page with all the info shortly, but in the meantime - those interested, email me and I'll forward you to the brother who's hookin' it all up. =========================================================== And, as always, everything above can be found on the Gig Schedule : http://www.brownman.com/GigSchedule.htm Hope everyone's well! =========================================================== FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES - Every Friday in Oct @ Trane Studio, 964 Bathurst St., Toronto 416-913-8197 http://www.brownman.com/PressReleases/FiveWeeksForMiles.html =========================================================== For 5 Fridays in Oct, I'll lead 5 different all-star ensembles through 5 historic eras of jazz which Miles Davis catalyzed & immortalized with his presence. The very detailed press release (link above) has alllll kinds of info about this event - times, ticket prices, who's performing (some of Canada's top-shelf jazz musicians - and each week is a different band), and a little synopsis about each night and what that era was in the Miles historic time-line. Please check it out. Paying tribute to the greatest icon in jazz history is no small task and I hope you'll come check out the artistry of these assorted killer ensembles. ---------------------------- Week 5 - Oct 29, 2004 - 9:00pm "Doo-bop" - Had he lived Towards the end of Miles' life he began an exploration of another sub-component of modern popular music - hip-hop. The "Doo-bop" recording (Warner,'92) would feature rappers and loops and would have marked the beginning of Miles' exploration or this artform. It is often harshly referred to by critics as his "worst" documented recording and as a "forgettable" era of his life, but it still stands strongly as a prime example of the Milesian ethic - his ability to recognize "what's next" and creatively move within and extend that artform. Brownman states "I believe it is extremely probable that Miles would have worked closely with the likes of Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, junglists, DJs, rappers, beat-makers alike... had he lived. Brownman - electric trumpet (http://www.brownman.com) Enlight - rapper DJ S-Luv - turntables (http://www.PocketDwellers.com) Marc Rogers - 6-string electric bass (http://www.MarcRogers.com) Larnell Lewis - drums *Tonight will be a salute to what MIGHT have been. =========================================================== UPCOMING GIGS (http://www.brownman.com/GigSchedule.htm) =========================================================== Fri Oct 29, 9pm - WEEK 5 (Miles Series) - "Had He Lived..." @ Trane Sat Oct 30, 1-5pm - JAZZ FOR HERBIE @ The Rex (fantastic fundraiser) Thr Nov 04, 9pm - BROWNMAN & The ELECTRYC TRIO @ Trane Studio Sat Nov 06, 10pm - MARRON MATIZADO @ Lula Lounge Tue Nov 09, 9pm - NICK ALI TRIO hosts the Jazz Jam @ The Rex Thr Nov 11, 9pm - BROWNMAN & The ELECTRYC TRIO @ Trane Studio Sat Nov 13, 7pm - RITA DI GHENT & SPRAWL INDIGO @ Heritage Theatre Thr Nov 18, 9pm - BROWNMAN & The ELECTRYC TRIO @ Trane Studio Fri Nov 19, noon - GRUVASYLUM concert/workshop @ Glenhaven Senior Thr Nov 25, 9pm - BROWNMAN & The ELECTRYC TRIO @ Trane Studio Sun Nov 28, 9pm - CRUZAO fundraiser @ Lula (raising money for Cuba) Thr Dec 02, 9pm - BROWNMAN & The ELECTRYC TRIO @ Trane Studio Sat Dec 04, 10pm - MARRON MATIZADO @ Lula Lounge Fri Dec 10, 9pm - BROWNMAN & The ELECTRYC TRIO @ 360 (Chakra Wagon) Dec 13-20 - CRUZAO represents Canada @ HAVANA JAZZ FESTIVAL, Cuba!
