Subject: Week 4 - FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES - Fri Oct 22 Date: Thu, 21 Oct 2004 14:28:31 -0400 From: The BROWNMAN Organization: Brownman Music Inc. -- http://www.brownman.com To: Brownman's Big Ass Mailing List Hey guys, And a big welcome to all who are new on the Big Ass Mailing List... =========================================================== WEEK 4 OF FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES... =========================================================== So this Friday is the Week 4 performance of my FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES series at the Trane Studio in Toronto and will feature the Electric Period of Miles' life... 1969 to the late 80's... was crazy amounts of work to prep some of those Marcus Miller arrangements for the band ... And huge thanks to Marc Rogers (marcrogers.com), bassist extrodinaire, for the late chinese food imbibing hours we put in together). Should be a helluva night. And thanks to the unexpected numbers of people coming out to these performances... it's wonderfully gratifying to put so much effort into a production of this magnitude covering such primordial material - and actually see people respond to it. My deepest thanks to all of you for that and for supporting live music in Toronto. In terms of sets that night - the first set will focus more on the early Bitches Brew material and the second and third sets more on the 70's funk and 80's Marcus Miller years... should be a blast! Please come on down and check it out... (more info below) P.S. - Week 5 - the last one... is gonna be totally sick... check it out... =========================================================== JAZZ BRUNCH WITH N.A.Q. @ Revival, Sun Oct 24, 1-4pm =========================================================== Also the NICK ALI QUARTET feat. Adrean Farrugia (piano), Michael "Danger" Herring (bass, DangerHerring.com) and Ben Riley (drums) will perform at Revival's new Sunday "Jazz Brunch" this Sunday Oct 24 from 1pm to 4pm... it's a great spot for brunch with killer food... hope you can make it! "Danger" and I will be running straight to Kool Haus afterward to perform later that night with juno-nominated jazz-reggae artist JASON WILSON & TABARRUK who will be opening for grammy-nominated reggae group ALPHA BLONDY. =========================================================== HELP CRUZAO GET TO CUBA... and come along too! =========================================================== As most of you know already CRUZAO has been asked to represent Canada at the Havana jazz festival in Cuba this Dec... however flights are crazy expensive and not covered by the festival (Castro you cheap bastard *grin*)... so we're having a fundraiser at Lula Lounge on Sunday Nov 28th where all proceeds going towards flights for the band... as it is now only 2 of us can go... we're hoping to raise enough bread to bring at least one more original CRUZAO member... the rest of the band will be assembled from members of IRAKERE while in Cuba)... so pleeeeease come out and support the only Canadian latin-jazz group performing at the Havana jazz fest this year! Thanks guys! Also - those who want to come along - email me... there's a tour company offering a special package to attend the festival including airfare, accomodations, a festival pass, city tours, breakfast, and you can follow CRUZAO around and clap loudly... uh... if you want... :) Anyway - I'll be putting up a page with all the info shortly, but in the meantime - those interested, email me and I'll forward you to the brother who's hookin' it all up. =========================================================== And, as always, everything above can be found on the Gig Schedule : http://www.brownman.com/GigSchedule.htm Hope everyone's well! =========================================================== FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES - Every Friday in Oct @ Trane Studio, 964 Bathurst St., Toronto 416-913-8197 http://www.brownman.com/PressReleases/FiveWeeksForMiles.html =========================================================== For 5 Fridays in Oct, I'll lead 5 different all-star ensembles through 5 historic eras of jazz which Miles Davis catalyzed & immortalized with his presence. The very detailed press release (link above) has alllll kinds of info about this event - times, ticket prices, who's performing (some of Canada's top-shelf jazz musicians - and each week is a different band), and a little synopsis about each night and what that era was in the Miles historic time-line. Please check it out. Paying tribute to the greatest icon in jazz history is no small task and I hope you'll come check out the artistry of these assorted killer ensembles. ---------------------------- Week 4 - Oct 15, 2004 - 9:00pm "Bitches Brew to Tutu" - Electric Miles Legendary as a kind of line in the sand challenging jazz fans during the ascendance of electric, psychedelic rock, "In a Silent Way" (Colombia Records, '69) hinted at the repetitive polyrhythms Davis would employ throughout the early '70s. It also partook generously of electric piano and bass tonal colourings previously explored in acoustic settings, but "In a Silent Way" and the subsequent "Bitches Brew" and "Live Evil" recordings remains a clearly electric jazz record, part ambient color exploration, part rock-inflected energy and vibe, and part outright maverick creativity. Long, breathy solos would be a feature of this era, glistening against his new groups' strange admixture of musical moods. Miles would stay on this "electric" path right in to the '80's, continually exploring these textures with newer and younger generations of musicians. Nick "Brownman" Ali - electric trumpet (http://www.Brownman.com) Adrean Farrugia - rhodes / synths Mark Patterson - electric guitar (formerly of Mike Bullard show) Marc Rogers - 6-string electric bass (http://www.MarcRogers.com) Daniel Barnes - drums (http://www.DanielBarnes.net) * The first set tonight will focus on the "Bitches Brew" 70's era... the second set will emphasize the "Tutu" 80's ideologies. =========================================================== UPCOMING GIGS (http://www.brownman.com/GigSchedule.htm) =========================================================== Fri Oct 22, 9pm - WEEK 4 (Miles Series) - "Electric Miles" @ Trane Sun Oct 24, 1-4pm - NICK ALI TRIO Jazz Brunch @ Revival Sun Oct 24, 6pm - TABARRUK & ALPHA BLONDIE @ Kool Haus Fri Oct 29, 9pm - WEEK 5 (Miles Series) - "Had He Lived..." @ Trane Sat Oct 30, 1-5pm - JAZZ FOR HERBIE @ The Rex (fantastic fundraiser) Thr Nov 04, 9pm - BROWNMAN & The ELECTRYC TRIO @ Trane Studio Tue Nov 09, 9pm - NICK ALI TRIO hosts the Jazz Jam @ The Rex Thr Nov 11, 9pm - BROWNMAN & The ELECTRYC TRIO @ Trane Studio Sat Nov 13, 7pm - RITA DI GHENT & SPRAWL INDIGO @ Heritage Theatre Thr Nov 18, 9pm - BROWNMAN & The ELECTRYC TRIO @ Trane Studio Fri Nov 19, noon - GRUVASYLUM concert/workshop @ Glenhaven Senior Thr Nov 25, 9pm - BROWNMAN & The ELECTRYC TRIO @ Trane Studio Sun Nov 28, 9pm - CRUZAO fundraiser @ Lula (raising money for Cuba) Dec 13-20 - CRUZAO represents Canada @ HAVANA JAZZ FESTIVAL, Cuba!
